My Life in Thailand - A Missionary Kid's Perspective

During the course of our home assignment in the States, I gave the same Thailand presentation at so many churches that our oldest son Joshua (11 years old) started to raise his hand and tell everybody parts of my talk that I hadn’t gotten to yet, or volunteer other details that he thought people should know.  He did this so many times, I suggested that he do his own presentation some time.  He must have thought I was only joking because his jaw nearly hit the floor when I told him I had arranged for him to share with the all the kids at a partner church we were planning to visit in Northern California.  After getting over his initial shock, we helped him prepare his presentation.  Some slides were borrowed from my presentation, but other slides were completely his own idea.  When the big day came, his presentation went so well that when asked how it went, Joshua replied, “I think I could do that again sometime.”  Therefore, I arranged for him to do it again at another church.

In the video below you’ll see Joshua's full presentation to the kids at Grace Presbyterian Church in Yorba Linda, California, followed by still images of the powerpoint slides he used.  I included those at the end because they are kind of hard to see in the video.

We keep telling the kids that God has called our whole family to the mission field, and that they are an important part of what we are doing.  Therefore, we were really pleased to see Joshua's interest in getting involved as our family has been on the deputation trail visiting churches.  I believe this has also been a good opportunity for one of our kids to give voice to his experiences in Thailand because it is not only Sun and I who are experiencing life overseas, but our kids too.

Joshua Climbs Khao Lom Muak

In January 2015, Karl took Joshua up Khao Lom Muak (เขาล้อมหมวก), a peak of about 900 feet in Prachuab province during a family vacation.  Joshua did surprisingly well on the hike and thoroughly enjoyed himself.  Here is some footage of Joshua telling about the hike while siting on the peak, as well as some clips from the hike down.  It is a bit hard to hear Joshua sometimes, so turn your computer / phone volume all the way up.

Joshua's Gift of Many Layers

My son had been waiting for a particular gift for quite some time and I I decided to have a bit of fun with him by wrapping it in about 7 layers of paper. It was rather fun to watch his reactions. Don't worry. He did get to the actual present eventually.

Dahlfred Kids' Inventions

Every six months, our mission organization holds a "Homeschool Week" for those families who are homeschooling to come together for some group activities and learning.  This past October, the theme for homeschool week and all the children had to present something that they had invented, or talk about an invention.  Our kids decided to put their thinking caps on and invent some things.  Mommy videoed the results, and Daddy edited it together into the video you see below.  The volume on some parts of the video is low, but you'll get the idea.  Enjoy.

A Christmas Thank You Message

We are really thankful for all the people who love our kids and think of them on birthdays and Christmas.  Here's a short video of Joshua and Caitlin thanking their Uncle James for the gifts he sent for Christmas this year.  We're not sure if they were more impressed with the gifts or the packaging!

Caitlin Starts to Walk

Caitlin has recently started walking.  Not perfectly, and not for long but it is definitely walking.  Joshua didn't walk until after a year old so at only 10.5 months, we are pretty impressed with her accomplishment.  Here is a short video of her efforts so far:

Joshua's Fourth Birthday Party

This past Saturday, we celebrated our son Joshua's fourth birthday, together with another missionary family.  After a lunch of hot dogs and french fries (per Joshua's request), we brought out the cake.  According to Joshua, a birthday is not a really a birthday unless you have a cake.  Here is a short one minute video that Sun took of the cake part of the event.

[Video] Tracing 175 Years of Thai Protestantism

[Video] Tracing 175 Years of Thai Protestantism

The short 20 minute video that you'll find below is a good overview of the birth and history of Christianity in Thailand.  It was prepared for the 2003 celebration of 175 years of Protestant Christianity in Thailand, counting from 1828 when Karl Gutzlaff and Jacob Tomlin arrived as the first two Protestant missionaries.

There is also a Thai-language book that goes along with the video, called "๑๗๕ ปี พันธกิจคริสต์ศาสนาโปรเตสแตนต์ในประเทศไทย, ค.ศ. ๑๘๒๘-๒๐๐๓" (175 Years of Protestant Christian Ministry in Thailand, 1828-2003).  The book is currently out of print but should be able to be found in libraries of seminaries and bible colleges in Thailand.

Grapes for Uncle James

One day, our dear boy Joshua plucked the grapes out of our basket of fake fruit on the kitchen table and said, "I want to send these to Uncle James (Karl's brother).  Let's go talk to him on the computer".  Because of the time difference between Thailand and the United States, that just wasn't going to happen (at least not if we wanted Uncle James to be happy about it).  So, I offered Joshua the opportunity to send a video message to instead.  Uncle James, these grapes are for you:

Home Barber Shop

Our son Joshua emphatically refuses to go to a real barber shop with Daddy to get his haircut.  He insists that Mommy cut his hair in the "home barber shop", which is his room (minus his crib). During his most recent haircut, Daddy got videotaped an interview with the haircut-ee.  See below for the results:

Caitlin is Baptized

This past month, we had the joy of having Caitlin baptized, welcoming her into the covenant community of the Christian church.  Baby Molly, the daughter of our friends Chris and Paige was baptized at the same time.  A fellow missionary videotaped the event and I include it below.  The video is all in Thai and I am afraid that I haven't had time to add English subtitles.

Pastor Natee, who did the baptism, had some really helpful comments about the nature of baptism that got me thinking.  First, people are baptized not because of what they have done but in recognition of what God has done.  Therefore, in the case of people who come to Christ and are baptized as adults, they are baptized in recognition of God's work in their life, regenerating their heart and granting them faith and repentance.  They are baptized because it is evident that God has chosen to bring them into the fold of the Christian church.  Baptism welcomes them into the visible church because God has already brought them into the invisible church.
